A few months ago, I was talking to a buddy about Guilty Pleasures and he mentioned Kelly Clarkson’s “Since U Been Gone”.
Yeah, that’s a big fat Guilty Pleasure. If you’ll recall, she was the first winner of American Idol many years ago but she’s gone on to have a solid career with a string of hits. I’ve never liked the idea of Idol because it went against natural selection. In life, it’s the strongest and most talented that survive. So in music, bands that write good songs, hone their craft, and bust their asses will get noticed on some level.
And just like real life, if you don’t have a ton of talent, you can make a pretty decent living if you’re really hot.
Most of the contestants on Idol can sing well but, let’s face it, outside of Carrie Underwood and Katherine McPhee, they are not good looking. Don’t believe me? Here are some Idol notables that had a lot of talent.
Now compare them to these two who are of modest talent, can write a catchy song, but are super-blessed in other ways -
Just saying…
Anyway, another song of Clarkson’s came back to haunt me – four times in the past week. Twice on the radio station for soccer moms, once on Dancing with the Stars, and once while watching Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement. Yes, all kinds of things I should be embarrassed about…
