The Lollapalooza 2012 Lineup is Here

The lineup for Lollapalooza 2012 was announced yesterday – exactly one day after I bought the 3-day pass – and I have to say I’m experiencing some buyer’s remorse.
Last year turned out to be a stellar lineup with some solid headliners – Deadmau5, Foo Fighters, Eminem. Sure, I was pretty ticked off at the Foo Fighters, but you can’t deny their appeal. The depth was even better with a lot of acts that ended up making big splashes since – Foster the People, Skrillex, Mayer Hawthorne, Dale Earnhardt Jr Jr Often, these performances on the smaller stages are way more energetic and end up being better than those on the larger ones. In the past that took the form of seeing The Killers, Girl Talk, and Mumford & Sons before they hit it big. It helps justify the ticket price when you find your next favorite artist or a future mainstage performer.

With the lineup announced yesterday, that theory is going to get tested. Here are the headliners for this year:
- Red Hot Chili Peppers – Saw them at Lolla 2006. They started out on fire and pretty much kept the energy up. The problem – after about 15 minutes you realize that every single song sounds exactly the same. So, oddly enough, you start to get really bored.
- The Black Keys – Retro-blues, heavy guitar, rock duo that’s starting to get a lot of airtime. Definitely intriguing, but as a top headliner? We’ll see…
- Jack White – More retro-blues, heavy guitar rock from a guy who hit it big in a duo. I like his work with White Stripes, not so much after that.
- Black Sabbath – Reunited Heavy Metal Godfathers. They’re classic “Paranoid” now has to do with those filthy bastards in Washington threatening to take away their Medicare.
What? The Lawrence Welk Orchestra wasn’t available? I’m also a little disappointed there isn’t any major hip hop act in the lineup. At least I can count on the food being good.

Skrillex at Perry's. I lasted all of 45 seconds in that madness.
What IS happening this year is the continued expansion of electronic/dance music. Over the years Perry’s, the stage devoted to electronic has grown. Last year it was a massive tent that probably held ten thousand – and it still wasn’t big enough. So that will be even bigger this year. Better dust off some of my moves like the Cabbage Patch or The Running Man.

Depeche Mode is somewhere in there...
Scanning the list, I’m excited to see The Shins, Sigur Ros, fun., and Santigold. There are a few others, but many more where I’m drawing a complete blank on their names. Are there any on the list that you recommend?

I don't know everything about the world of food and wine, but I'm not going to let a small detail like that stop me from blogging about it.
From what I have heard from them, I’d suggest Of Monsters And Men and Walk Off The Earth, but there are a lot of names I don’t know on there, so there could easily be some really good ones. I wonder if Zedd will go on right before or right after Zed’s Dead. Either way that would mean the organizers have a good sense of humor.
Haha… that would be funny. Thanks for the tips! Will report back in August. But don’t wait until then to come back
HOT DAMN! Just saw a bunch of Walk off the Earth vids and I GOTTA see them. Those covers are amazing – Party Rock, Adele, Wiz Khalifa…Thanks for the tip
M83, Passion Pit, and Miike Snow! Yes, they are all electronic, but it’s quality electronic, trust me! Enjoy, I’m really jealous you get to go. I’ll be waiting for the free Monday concerts at Millenium Park soon 🙂
Tix are still available, but 3-days are expensive. I know you can get reasonable prices day-of on Craigslist. Or you can try to sneak in, but that option got really hard last year.
I’ll definitely try to check these out. Electronic has been the most exciting stuff lately. Thanks!
Just pulled up a bunch of songs and I’ve heard M83 before. Love Midnight City…
I would love to see anything by Junkie XL. If you don’t know who he is, one of his best tunes was in the Freddy vs. Jason movie. He did the song heard at the rave.
I think I read something on him recently. Youtubed some songs and will def try to hit his show.
I’d second the recommendation for Miike Snow – good stuff for sure.
What? No Teddy Pendergrass?
