leave your inhibitions at the door
I think everybody knows what a flash mob is by now, right? It’s where a bunch of people put on some kind of performance in a crowded area to the surprise of innocent bystanders. And everybody should know what a lip dub is, too. What?? You didn’t read this awesome post by a handsome blogger?
A few years ago I experienced something that’s kind of like both of those, but a little different. And I’m wondering if there’s a name for it.
I was traveling on business to Columbia, SC. I’m pretty sure that it wasn’t one of those mornings after hanging out with a client all night. You know, the kind of night where we ran up a tab on the corporate credit card while brainstorming on innovative ways to classify vodka tonics on my expense report. So I wasn’t dragging my sorry ass to a coffee shop to load up on caffeine so I could be presentable to the client. And I didn’t show up to the client’s office to find that he was too hungover to make it in on time.
But then again, it could’ve been one of those mornings.
Anyway, I went to the coffee shop and put in my order of a triple shot latte, red eye, red bull, no-doz special. As I waiting for my drink, this song came on.
You remember that one hit wonder, right? Totally a Guilty Pleasure.
There were two guys working there and all of a sudden they started singing along to it. Not just humming or softly crooning to themselves, we’re talking out loud singing. By the time the chorus came around, they were belting out at the top of their lungs, “Breathe, just breathe…” What made it more unsettling was the sight of these two guys. One guy was your garden variety geeky college student – not a hipster, just some plain, average, lanky guy. The other guy, I swear to Juan Valdez, looked like this…
Pretty disturbing, eh? Not him, because I’d never call someone with those pythons disturbing. I’m talking the whole situation…
So what was it that I just witnessed? It’s kind of like a flash mob, but it wasn’t rehearsed. And it’s kinda like a lip dub, but it was live and they were actually singing. Maybe “Random Sing-a-long”? “Spontaneous Karaoke”?
By the way, I TOTALLY joined in and sang with them.
