The Food and Wine Hedonist

leave your inhibitions at the door

The Hollywood Vampire

I am soooooo loving AMC’s original series The Walking Dead.  I started watching the first two seasons on Netflix last week on the recommendation of several friends.  How bad did I get hooked?  I saw all 19 episodes in six days – it’s that terrific.  The problem was  that, with the show’s imagery and material, I could only watch it after the Pieholes went to bed.  And I had to watch it on the TV in the basement.  So late at night, I had to go up two flights of stairs to go to bed.  In the dark. #scaredouttamygourd

So it only seems fitting that I do a special pre-Halloween post on Zombies.   Nope – been there, done that.  Instead, I want to call your attention to something equally as scary that truly does exist – vampires. There’s been a bunch of books, movies, and tv shows about vampires lately, but NONE OF THEM talk about the one that’s right there in Hollywood.

I’m talking about Winona Ryder.

How do I know that?  The evidence is clear.  Through the years, Ms. Ryder dated several men in the music and film industries who were either at or near the top of their profession.  THEN – poof! They vanished.  Here are just a few of them (with timeframe of their relationship):

Evan Dando (1993) Lead singer of the Lemonheads, a group that had a string of hits in the early 90s.  Dando himself was on People Magazine’s 50 Most Beautiful People List.  Then… the band went into “hiatus”.  Some may argue that’s more Yoko  Ono than Dracula, but not me.

Dave Pirner (1993-97) He was lead singer of Soul Asylum, a band that was huge in the mid-90s after two major albums – Grave Dancers Union and Let Your Dim light Shine.  I saw them at a couple big venues in Chicago.  After break-up – state fairs and minor street parties.

Beck (2000) Before they started dating, he was one of a small handful of artists that defined Alternative Rock.  After dating – a string of almost unlistenable albums.

Jakob Dylan (2000) Son of music-God Bob Dylan who also saw fame as leader of The Wallflowers. You’d think that Bob Dylan blood in his system would make him immune, but no such luck. .

Keanu Reeves (2003) Pre-Winona, he had a string of huge box office smashes – Matrix trilogy, Speed, Point Break (YEAH!). Where’s he been since then?  ANNDDD, you haven’t heard from his band Dogstar lately, either.  Then again, you never heard from Dogstar before their relationship.

There were some former lovers who miraculously survived.  However, it took a long time before they returned to fame:

Rob Lowe (1986-1988) He was completely unavoidable in the 80s, post-Winona he was unfindable.  He was relegated to minor parts until he landed a role in TV’s West Wing in 1999.

Robert Downey Jr (1988)  They dated just after his awesome performance in Less Than Zero.  He didn’t make a total comeback until a few years ago.  Some blame the drugs and prison.  We know the real reason.

Johnny Depp (1989-1993) He was A-List before 1993 with Edward Scissorhands and Gilbert Grape, etc.  He didn’t get back into a groove until 2003.

Christian Bale (1994) He was up-and-coming until she derailed his career.  He finally pulled through in 1999 with American Psycho.

The only former lover who didn’t have a fall from grace is Matt Damon, who dated her from 1997-2000. In fact, he actually got more popular after dating her.  Hmmmm, maybe it’s time to start researching the careers of his former flames.

While I do that, here’s one from Soul Asylum –

Is it just me?  Am I the only one who sees this?  Can we at least agree the girl got around?!?

This post is epic. I’ve loved Winona since Heathers. Then in the early 90s several people, including my very cool hair stylist, told me I looked just like her (although any pale, dark haired girl in a pair of overalls could pass for her back then, I think). Once I saw Reality Bites, she was my hero.

You also mention so many of my 90s crushes…Evan Dando (I remember that People magazine well), Keanu Reeves, Rob Lowe, Dave Pirner (the dreads!) and Jakob Dylan (my favorite). I still have a crush on Johnny Depp and Robert Downey, Jr. I never realized her list of victims was so comprehensive.

Also, remember that guest post I was supposed to do for you?? (I’m hanging my head in shame.) Well, believe it or not, I half wrote it and mentioned this very song by the Lemonheads. Maybe I should finish that. . .

I Googles who she dated and the list was huge! The guy from Jamiroquai said she was insatiable. I was thinking of adding him, but that’s too much attention for Jamiroquai.

And yes! I still remember the guest post. Whenever you’re ready. R u connecting it to eating local or is it pure music?

The post was turning into an ode to the 90s, followed by love for early 2000 pop music, and ending with a surprise guilty pleasure song. No local food mentioned. As you can see, I have a good handle on the post, just have to get it on paper!

I’ve always had my suspicions about Ms. Ryder. Good to know I’m not the only one. Great post. It made me laugh. Happy Friday.
