Top Chef Seattle Episode 7: Foiled Again

Episode 6     Episode 8

I called it!  Back in Episode 4, I made the comment:

Kristen gets a footrub from Stefan.  She’s gotta take off those socks for that.  And her pants.

I thought it was chummy, but then they started goofing around on camera a bit more.  Which got me to say last week:

Yeah, Stefan and Kristen are totally banging each other.

This week, during the Quickfire, Stefan gives her an adorable “you did great” look when they were talking about her dish.  I know what you’re thinking –  “Hedonist, get your mind out of the gutter.  It was innocent.  All the chefs probably did that to their fellow contestants.”

Maybe, but do the contestants get all snuggly on the couch!?!?!

This is the shiznit I was looking for last year on Top Chef Texas when they were all in a mansion with a giant hot tub.  I was expecting all kinds of Bachelor/Bachelorette-type reality show hot tub fun, but was greatly disappointed.  Then again, there weren’t any that I would’ve wanted to see in the tub.  Kristen’s very pretty, so maybe they have one of those Jacuzzi things in the hotel bathroom?

Have there been any hookups in previous seasons?

Season 4 winner Stephanie Izard was brought back for this episode and it seemed promising.  She’s been there with them and is now an award-winning chef in Chicago.  So there’s potential for some good insight and challenges.  And what do we get?

Reynolds Wrap ™.  Blatant, over-the-top, hit you on the head product placement. They have 30 minutes to cook anything they want, but all the ingredients in the kitchen are wrapped in Reynolds Wrap™.   Once opened, the chefs HAVE to use the ingredient.  And, to really showcase the versatility of Reynolds Wrap™, any cooking vessels they use have to be made from Reynolds Wrap™.  Says Izard (and I paraphrase) – We use Reynolds Wrap™ all the time in our kitchen.  I’m curious to see how the chefs here use Reynolds Wrap™.  Maybe I can find something innovative to bring back to my restaurant. Reynolds Wrap™.

The winner gets immunity.

– Danyele – Cannellini bean stew with bacon & asiago cheese.

– Neville Jr – Grilled Lamb with tomato fennel panzanella

– Stefan – Hot smoked salmon with german potato salad… He said a whole bunch of other stuff, but had couldn’t understand his accent

– Time Bomb – Beef egg drop soup and braised pineapple

– Brooke – Bacon roasted yams with bacon, onion, & apple salad

– Yukon Cornelius – Roasted Chicken with potatoes, poblano, tomatillo, & carrots

– Kristen – almond & chocolate cake.

– Overgrown van Damme – beer poached cod with butter beer sauce. I’d totes eat that

– Sheldon – lemongrass smoked scallops with tomato & shallot salad.  Gimme some!

Least Favorites – Brooke (onion overpowering), Neville Jr (lamb rare), Yukon (uninspired)

Those who did well – Sheldon, Kristen, Overgrown van Damme, Danyele, Stefan, Josie

Favorites – Danyele, Kristen, Sheldon

Winner – Kristen

Elimination Challenge

The chefs had to create a dish highlighting a specific berry for 150 attendees at a Berry Festival.  I thought it was odd that they called out the chefs who did well in the Quickfire and then chose favorites from there.  Now it makes sense – the Elimination Challenge involved head to head battles and those who did well got to pick their competition.  Since she has immunity, Kristen would cook alone but is still eligible for winning the $10K.    Favorites are based on festivalgoer votes.

And the battles were  –

Sheldon – Ahi summer roll – Ahi poke, strawberries and sweet chili sauce

Neville Jr – strawberry fried chicken, with strawberry and  bacon biscuit

Danyele – Chicken Pine nut terrine with blueberry mostarda

Yukon – Savory goat cheese mousse with blueberry compote

Stefan – cali crudo with radishes gooseberry and spiced vinaigrette

TB – white gazpacho with spanis h chorizo, gooseberries, white grapes

Josie – Rock n Raspberry Roll – sockeye salmon, Dungeness crab & raspberry aioli.  What a cheesy name.  And it took forever.

Lizzy – Raspberry steamed cabbage roll w heritage pork & bacon stuffing

Brooke – spicy smoked chocolate pudding with blackberry tapioca

Overgrown van Damme –blackberry soup with salmon and rhubarb yogurt

Kristen – matcha goat milk custard with macerated tayberries

Her Conscience.  Obviously conscience is losing…

Winners of the battles – Sheldon, Yukon, Stefan, Lizzy, Overgrown, Kristen

Winning dish – Kristen’s because it highlighted the berry, was unique, and had no flaws.  This is the 2nd week in a row where the immunity winner wins the elimination challenge.  That’s the way to do it – take risks when you have nothing to lose.

Gone – Danyele…the chicken was rubbery and like bologna and the bread was rock hard.  No big loss, she was barely a blip.

Random Thoughts

– It was AWESOME to see the ongoing insults between Time Bomb and Stefan.  I think the producers were trying to play it up as something more than it actually was.  But based on Anthony Bourdain’s “Kitchen Confidential,”  that’s a day in the life in a professional kitchen.  Loved it.

– Stephanie Izard’s restaurant – The Girl & The Goat – ROCKS!!  Here’s my post on it.

– The Quickfire is like the one last year where they chose ingredients blindfolded.   This time there wasn’t anything near as funny as Sonny Chiba getting sausage casings.

– Stefan in Quickfire: “Going back to Asian heritage.”  That’s what love does to you.

– Time bomb had a tough time figuring out what to with pineapple in the Quickfire.  He should’ve gone here.

– Nice high school pic of Yukon Cornelius with the denim shirt and denim jeans.  He wasn’t worth the effort of me taking a picture of my TV.

– Brooke echoed my thoughts when she surmised that being the last picked in the head-to-heads means she’s the most feared.  So it’s a sign of respect, not like Janis Ian being picked last in basketball.

– Brooke – “I’ve been on the top a lot…”  Yeah, I’d pay to see that.

– They had that snippet of how the other chefs found Josie as annoying as I do.  I think that Tom hit it on the head when she was gabbing at the fest, trying to stall as she didn’t have food prepared.  He said, “For some reason she thinks that putting on a show is more important …”  THAT’S IT!  That’s what was bugging me about her.  Everything seems to be self-promotion – a stupid name for her dish, the Chef Josie headbands…

– They said they Elimination Challenge was to cook for 150 people at the Berry Festival. It looked like about 20, including the Bluegrass band.

berry fest

– There was a lot going on with Brooke’s dish – spice, smoke, Earl Grey tea in the marshmallows.  Good to see some complexity piled in there.  That served Kundun well last year.

I couldn’t believe the absurdity of Yukon’s high school photo. I was embarrassed for him.

Haha… 90s were a beyotch fashion-wise. 80s were worse so I probably shouldn’t be talking about HS pictures.
