Guilty Pleasures – Hall and Oates

A couple months ago, I saw an article on avclub.com where a panel of their writers gave their thoughts on what was the best musical sequence in a non-musical movie. And you thought that it was just ME that had to much time on my hands.

One of the moments mentioned was an AWESOME scene from 500 Days of Summer where the main character just scored for the first time with his girlfriend. Obviously he’s on cloud nine –

Any guy will tell you that this sequence PERFECTLY captures the moment – the sun is shining, you have an extra spring in your step, everyone’s smiling at you. And yes, especially the part where he looks into his reflection and it’s Han Solo looking back at him. Using Hall & Oates’ “You Make my Dreams Come True” here was downright brilliant.

Reading that article was one of those stars-coming-into-alignment moments for me. The girlfriend in the movie is played by Zooey Deschanel and I had just received Seasoned with Sarcasm’s guest post about her. ANNNNNNDDDD, a couple of weeks later it was an old friend’s birthday.

What’s the significance of that friend’s birthday, you ask?

It’s important because that friend (who shall remain nameless) is a huge Oates & Hall fan. She has seen Oates & Hall in concert several times and will continue to see them whenever they come around. I’m sure she’s on all the Oates & Hall fan pages and has probably penned Oates & Hall fan fiction as well.

And what’s with the Oates & Hall typos, you ask? (Stop asking questions, btw, it’s distracting)

THOSE AREN’T TYPOS! In her book it’s “Oates & Hall.” She’s always had a major crush on John Oates and doesn’t really give two shakes about Daryl Hall.

Yes, that was a shocker for me, too. Hall was the one that did most of the singing and was considered the main guy. I’m sure Oates was just as talented and probably had equal songwriting credits but, c’mon, people remember Hall because he was clearly the leader. He sang on more songs, had the better voice, and was more charismatic. It’s not like they were equals in the sense of Lennon & McCartney, Simon & Garfunkel, or Milli & Vanilli.

So her digging Oates is like saying your favorite Stooge was Shemp. Or that your favorite superheroes were Robin & Batman. Or that Wham! was made up of Andrew Ridgeley and some other guy named George Michael.

Anyway, the article, guest post, and birthday all led to my being on a major Hall & Oates kick lately.

Their older songs are so well-crafted and sung with such soulfulness that no one would fault you for loving them. I’m talking about songs like “She’s Gone,” “Rich Girl,” and “Sara Smile”, which is my favorite –

music

But it’s really, really hard to deny the allure of their bright, super-pop, sugary hits. “You Make My Dreams Come True” definitely falls into that category as does “Kiss on my List” and “Maneater.”

Thankfully, this is a Guilty Pleasures post and I can proudly post this video.

What was your favorite Hall & Oates song? Am I right that Hall was THE GUY? Or are you on Team Oates?

My parents look like Hall & Oates. Or at least they do in the booklet in their greatest hits CD.

I will listen to pretty much anything by Hall & Oates. I ❤ them. And that little dance sequence in 500 Days of Summer! My dad actually rocked the Oates look back when I was a baby in 1980. But his hair was a little more fro like. Or fluffy. Certainly not tamed like Oates is in the photo above.

I am not guilty at all about loving Hall and Oates, and quite frankly, I’m tired of people trying to say it’s something to be embarrassed about. They are gifted musicians, with decades of experience and accolades. As a culture, it would behoove us to get over the fact that somehow 80’s pop music is embarrassing. It is not, and I refuse to feel guilty about loving Hall and Oates.

I do not know if I am a “fan” per se (probably because I could never grow a ‘stache like that) but I do like their music. I reserve my fandom for the Bay City Rollers….

Every time I think of Hall and Oates the movie She’s Out of My League comes to mind. One of the supporting characters was in a H&O cover band. I now can’t get Kiss on my list out of my mind.

I just love your writing style…I have NO clue who Hall and Oates are, but I loved the article. 🙂

  7. No lie…. I have forever joked about starting a Hall & Oates tribute band named Big-Bam-Boom, in honor of their 1984 classic including cuts like… “Out of TOuch” and “Method of Modern Love.”
