Yo! It’s time for another re-run, this time for a couple reasons. First, I had this song running through my ahead again earlier this week and it brought me back to this post. Plus, the new movie Star Trek: Into Darkness opens today and you can’t talk about the serious subjects in this post too often.
What serious subjects? Ricardo Montalban’s chest and Stevie Nicks’ dating habits, of course. Silly you.

I learned a new term recently – Earworm. There are a few different meanings with the obvious being a bug that attacks corn. The term also refers to that nasty creature that went into people’s brains in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Do you remember that flick? The one with Ricardo Montalban and the nice pecs?
Star Trek
Earworm is also the term used for a song that gets stuck in your head for days and you can’t get it out. One of the popular remedies is to actually listen to it over and over again until you get sick of it. That often works, but what I always do is to tell others about the song so it’ll automatically get stuck in their heads, too. No, it doesn’t really help to get it out my mine, but I’m a firm believer of sharing the wealth.
There are two songs that seem to become earworms for me a few times a year – I Want it That Way and this week’s Guilty Pleasure, the only hit from Walter Egan. What’s notable about this song is that Lindsey Buckingham, of Fleetwood Mac fame, produced it. He even played guitar on the track and sang backup vocals along with Mac bandmate Stevie Nicks. Apparently she was the inspiration for the song as Egan was starting to date her. Can’t say I blame the guy, she was hot back then –

And she got around. Everyone knows about how she dumped Lindsey and started banging drummer Mick Fleetwood during the sessions for their album Rumours. But a quick search came up with several of her former flings – most notably Joe Walsh, Don Henley, and Dave Stewart (Eurhythmics). But the best one had to have been Chicago Bulls legend Norm Van Lier.

But back to Walter Egan… What’s worse: being forever known as a one-hit wonder or having an eerie resemblance to Scorpio, the villain from Dirty Harry?

Here’s the video. Lindsey and Stevie aren’t in it, but you can definitely hear their voices.
By the way… I have a thousand Guilty Pleasure songs, but if you have one that you want to see posted, let me know.

Curse you FWH! I made the mistake of clicking on the video! Earworm fully embedded….
At least it’s a good song! It could’ve been Its a Small World.
Nooooo! clicked on video, now suffering greatly. Get out of my brain, Stevie and Co.!
I didn’t know this was called an earworm – I called it “songfluenza” in a previous post. http://pegoleg.com/2011/02/18/songfluenza-outbreak-nearly-an-epidemic/
That’s a great name for it. Thankfully I’m not familiar with te goatherd song. And no, I don’t want to be. 🙂
It’s from The Sound Of Music. C’mon, you know you have to….
Oh hell nawwww…that ones evil. Yes I know that all too well, just had a brainfart on the name. Right now there’s a major battle between this and Magnet & Steel going thru my head. No one wins.
I love most 70s lite songs and in fact made a FB friend (who ended up moving to Ann Arbor and is now a RL friend!) when she and I were posting 70s songs to a friend’s FB post!
I just have to read the phrase “I Want it That Way” and it’s stuck.
I hate you.
Greatest Boy Band Song. Evah!!!
