You know it’s a Guilty Pleasure when you like teeny-bopper songs by a Disney child star and your pre-teen daughter DOESN’T.
teen star
Selena started in showbiz in 2002 at the tender age of 10 as a regular on “Barney and Friends”. She then had a bunch of guest appearances on various Disney Channel before getting a starring role in “Wizards of Waverly Place” in 2007. She was an immediate hit with the pre-teen and early-teen crowd and went on to make several kids TV shows and movies.
Now at the age of 21, she’s all grown up and all over the place. Because of her on-again/off-again relationship with The Biebs, she’s been in the spotlight a little more than a lot of her peers. She’s been taking on more mature roles in movies as well. This past year, perhaps in an effort to shed her Disney image, she starred in the dark comedy Spring Breakers. In the movie she and three friends are scantily-clad and on spring break when they meet up with some unsavory characters then turn to drugs, crime, and violence.

Whoa, I’d say she’s grown-up.
Musically, she’s had a couple albums out with bright, infectious pop songs. I doubt she writes the songs herself, and her voice isn’t Mariah Carey-quality, but she definitely gets the job done. Here’s a couple of songs that I love. “Hit the Lights” –

And this year’s “Come and Get it” –

Now I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking that I really don’t like the music and only like her because she’s very attractive. It’s a fair point but I gotta tell you – you’re dead wrong. In fact, I’m a little offended at the accusation. She was a DISNEY CHANNEL STAR, for crying out loud. She was on TV all the time in our house and there’s NO WAY I could be attracted to her for her looks.
Besides, everyone knows that, as far as teen stars go, Victoria Justice was hotter.

Happy Friday!
PS – Oof. I need a shower now. Not a cold one, but just to clean off the dirtiness I’m now feeling.

Friday
Dirty old man.
Perv. ;). JK. Selena Gomez is a hottie. No crime in calling a spade a spade
I love that you love Selena Gomez. But it’s true, Victoria Justice was way hotter.
I can stand guilty right next to you – I like her songs too (the looks are fine, but I don’t think she fits my definition of “hot”). I like “Hit the Lights” – it is stylistically close to my personal “guilty pleasure” – Cascada (talking strictly about the music, not sure if I saw any Cascada’s videos).
When it was first released, I completely rocked out to Come and Get It in the car for weeks, not knowing who sang it. Then, after a particularly raucous sing-along session with one of my friends in the car, she pointed out “You know that’s Selena Gomez, right?”
I did not.
But I was in way too far to turn back, so I’ve had no choice but to become a fan.
Yeah, when you get preteen kids you give up the ghost of being alternative and non-pop. You’re just getitng there ahead of your time. Which is cool in a sense, but not really. Just go with it!
Absolutely! But what happens with me is that I mix in these songs with my normal hipster mix on playlists that get played in public places and get the strangest looks (from people who are singing along with the song) with comments like: ” Is this what you listen to all the time?”
