This one’s a no-brainer, eh?
Avicii is one of the biggest acts in Electronic Dance Music, so it’s pretty easy to see how his music is ideal for getting people moving. The main reason for choosing him for this round of “Exercise Music” is that I CAN’T STOP playing this song…
Avicii – Don’t Wake Me Up
Dance music
I came into the EDM craze a little late… OK, I guess technically that’s not true as I was very much alive and dancing in the 70s when disco was king. Like everyone in the world not in Eastern Europe, I moved on from disco but at that point the seeds already took root. Soon after disco I got into the likes of New Order and Kraftwerk who, thankfully, are still incredibly cool. Yet EDM was still kinda… European.
It still is a little Euro-flavored as the biggest names are from there – Avicii, David Guetta, Daft Punk, Swedish House Mafia, to name a few. Thankfully, EDM’s become more accepted on this side of the Atlantic. In fact, it’s gotten so popular here that the hopelessly unhip Grammy’s has it as a new category.
I saw Avicii at last year’s Lollapalooza and was a little surprised to find his show infinitely more entertaining than The Red Hot Chili Peppers.

But given my history with dance music, that shouldn’t have been a shocker.
Let’s put my own personal tastes aside for a moment. I know a lot of people believe the Chili’s to be one of the best bands ever, with their infectious songs, incredible musicianship, and raucous live shows. And a lot of those same people turn their noses up when they see a DJ fiddling with equipment instead of striking a guitar pose and singing their hearts out. But consider this – DJs get people dancing from the first beat and continue to do so non-stop. The same can’t be said for the 10 minute Flea-Frusciante Jazz Odyssey solos in the middle of EVERY DAMN SONG. Although, I do admit that those were primo opportunities to get a beer or hit the bathroom.
There are EDM concerts and fests all over the world. If you get a chance, you gotta check one out. Set aside your inhibitions about dancing in public with kids half your age. It’s dark and no one can see you doing the Elaine.

I’d highly recommend carbo-loading the night before, though.
Here’s another Avicii song from a couple years ago that still hasn’t gotten old. Every time I listen to it, I start to look like the guy in the video…

Have you been to any EDM concerts? What’s got you moving these days?

Hm, I guess it is all a question of personal taste and what gets you moving. Personally, while I occasionally listen to same EDM (you mentioned Swedish House Mafia) and find it mildly entertaining (if totally shallow), I would not go to an EDM concert. I mean, I guess EDM is okay if you enjoy going clubbing, but for concerts or personal enjoyment my tastes are different. RHCP, Nirvana (when KC was still alive), Depeche Mode, White Stripes (when they were still together), ZZ Top, REM, Linkin Park, Nickelback, they all rock my world. And going back in time, Led Zeppelin, Dire Straits, Clash, Cure, Stone Roses…

(Edit)
Of that list I’ve seen RHCP 3x, Depeche, Stripes, REM 3x, and the Cure. Clash is my fav band all-time but I wasn’t old enough to see them.
There have been many acts where I really LOVED the music and was bummed at the shows when people next to us talked through the show or -worse yet – sang/shrieked horribly at the top of their lungs. And many where the acts themselves really challenged my patience – like Grateful Dead’s 30 minute drums and space solos and SHawn Colvin talking for 20 minutes between songs.
I’ve never been a clubgoer, but there’s something about the energy in the crowd of EDM shows. THanks for stopping by!
Wow, way cool! Thanks for sharing that. I wasn’t old enough to see the Clash perform either… And, I can totally relate to what you say about certain people’s “concert behavior”. 😉 I may have misunderstood the point you were trying to make in the OP – sorry.
Don’t be sorry! I’m not sure u misunderstood. Even if u did, I dont know what I mean half the time…
I hear you, Man! 😉

An interesting choice of exercise music… I think I need a touch more energy there : )
Feeling rather old. Saw The Stones when Mick still played the harp and didn’t dance around and followed the Grateful Dead for two months. Love EDM as long as I’ve had a few glasses of wine. But, must admit I liked the video. Thanks for sharing.
I’ve never been to an EDM concert, but I did dance to a lot of electronica while clubbing in the ’90’s. For exercise, I like Foo Fighters, Pink, Maroon 5, anything with an angry edge. The intensity gives me strength and energy.
Maroon 5 angry? Maybe hard to breathe …
Overexposed(One more night, Payphone, Tickets..) I think our Adam is becoming more cynical with age.

Haha. I totally get the man-crush on Adam.
Yes. Yes. YES! I just raced a 5K this morning and my iPod was stocked with Avicii and Getta, because, not only does it keep me cruising along, it also keeps a giant smile on my face. Especially Avicii, I don’t know what it is, but from the first cord I am totally blissed out and all of my pain melts away. In defense of RHCP, Snow is also an ever-present staple on my work-out mix that I just never tire of.
Yeah, I’m not totally down on RHCP, but their live shows really bummed me out. I was just jamming out to Give it Away earlier today! Congrats on the 5k!
