Guilty Pleasures – Ariana Grande

I was riding in the car with The Pieholes and Big Pun’s “Still Not a Player” came on the iPod.

This is still one of my favorite jams and it’s a shame Big Pun died at the tender age of 28.  Of course, being 5’2” and 698 pounds tends to shorten one’s life.

The Pies were flipping out a little because it’s the same beat and piano riff used in this week’s Guilty Pleasure. This song’s been all over the radio for a few months, but I’m still digging it.  Although I’m not sure that in a year or so we’re going to be calling this or any of her songs a Guilty Pleasure.

But for now, it’s definitely a GP because Ariana Grande is most known for appearing in the Nickelodeon shows “iCarly” and “Victorious” as a character named Cat Valentine.  I don’t recall seeing her in either of those shows and, with tween girls in the house, I thought I’ve seen every FRICKING episode.  Now she’s got her own show with the blonde chick from “iCarly” called “Sam & Cat.”  We’re pretty much done with Nick shows now, so my girls don’t watch it.  So I figured I’d be a quasi-journalist and do some research by watching an episode for you.

The shit I do for my eight readers.

You’d think that after years of playing the same character, she’d be comfortable in the role.  But she has this really weird voice affectation/accent like she’s really uncomfortable with being on camera. I can’t really figure it out.  It could very well be she’s trying to be ditsy by imitating Dan Akroyd’s monumentally embarrassing trainwreck performance in Caddyshack 2 –

Or maybe she’s channeling her inner “Small Wonder”

There’s no way in hell am I embedding clips of those performances because I really have to have some standards around here.  But you can see Aykroyd here  and Small Wonder here.    Trust me, awful doesn’t begin to describe those wretched pieces of “acting.”

Anyway, I don’t think Ariana Grande is going to stick around Nick that long, even if the show becomes a hit.  Her first album was just released and debuted at #1 and she has a killer voice.  Like, it’s Mariah Carey and Christina Aguilera good.  Except I actually like  “The Way”.   While those other two have amazing voices,  I loathe just about all their songs.

Heck, if Miley can make it with her tinny voice I think Ariana will do gangbusters.  Plus she’s better-looking.

Am I the only one who remembered Small Wonders?  Do you like this or Big Pun’s song more?  Can we at least agree that Dan Ackroyd was painful to watch in Caddyshack 2 and his career has never recovered?

I used to loooove that song by Big Pun! It was definitely my jam for a good year back in 1998. Just that first beat in the song and I would know what was going to play. Good memories 🙂

Still Not a Player was my and ErinGoBrawl’s theme song in college. Numbers don’t go high enough to count the times we danced to that song while slamming a Coors Light at a house party, a bar, a frat party, or just in our apartment (we were classy broads).

Based on her good sampling choices alone, I have decided that I must now love Ariana Grande. She’s not as good as the original, but I’ll take it since just a hint of that riff brings back some of my all-time favorite memories.

Don’t stop, get it, get it.

When I was writing this post I had this feeling that you were going to be all over the Big Pun song. Soooo many great lines in it
