Guilty Pleasures Recycled – Just a Friend

I’m sure Biz Markie’s greatest hit is on everyone’s list of Top 5 all-time Guilty Pleasures.  Everyone knows it.  Go to a party and yell out an off-key “Youuuuuuu, you got what I need” and I guarantee you’re going to get a unanimous response.  But it does beg the question – if a song is universally known and “loved”, does it cease to be a Guilty Pleasure?  Nah, this one’s still pretty bad – humorous, but still bad.

And a lot of rap was pretty bad back then.  Remember Kris Kross’ “Jump” or Positive K’s “I Got a Man”?  MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice, anyone?  In retrospect, even Young MC wasn’t that great.   Throw in hairbands from the same era, and it’s pretty clear that the late 80s were the music Dark Ages.

I introduced the Pieholes to the song about 3 years ago and for 2 straight weeks we listened it every time we got in the car.  Months later, we were at a party and friends down the street were saying how their kids were singing it.  Apparently, Piehole C (in kindergarden at the time) taught the song to the whole bus.  I was so proud.

Luckily, they were young enough that they didn’t catch the lyrics “a fella tongue-kissin my girl in the mouth” and “she had 9/10 pants and a very big bra”.   If they did, I don’t know how I would answer their inevitable questions.  Such as – ”Is it possible to tongue-kiss a girl outside of her mouth?” and “Dad, how could she have 9/10 pants when he just mentioned seconds earlier that “She had long hair and a short miniskirt?”  Burning questions…

Very much so. And so was “I Come Off.” I thought for sure we’d get more from him, but he disappeared faster than a plate of sausages at a Winegetter Family Reunion.

I made it through the 80’s and could have gone my whole life without ever hearing this…thank you?…

And now this will be stuck in my head all day, and I kind of love it!

Vanilla Ice and MC Hammer were both two of the first cassette tapes that I ever owned. I am not ashamed. Okay, maybe a little, but my first CD was Pearl Jam, so that makes everything okay? Right? RIGHT?!?!

No need to be ashamed of ice and hammer. So no reason to have pearl jam as an equalizer. Not that they hold much weight w me… 1st Music purchases is a great topic tho. Hmmm
