What’s Going to be the Song of the Summer?

With the unofficial start of summer this weekend (Memorial Day here in the US) and the actual June solstice only a few weeks away, it’s time to start thinking about THE song of the summer.

The song of summer is that huge song, slow or fast, that captures the mood and feeling of the season.  It puts smiles on people’s faces and is on everyone’s minds and tongues in the warmer months.  It’s the perfect soundtrack for driving around in the convertible, going to barbecues, or hanging out at the beach or pool.

It’s also the song that you’ll be sick and tired of by September, in perfect timing with the end of summer itself.

Classic Examples from the Past

No summer song list would be complete without Mungo Jerry’s hit In the Summertime. I don’t know what I love most – the song or his immense sideburns.

*

*

Neither, it’s the fishnet shirt.  It’s summer, I gotta get me one of those.

Another classic example is Sheryl Crow’s Soak up the Sun

*

*

I keep forgetting how gorgeous she was in that video.

Katy Perry is another gorgeous singer who had one of the biggest summer songs in recent history.  And she had the decency to include Snoop Dogg in it – California Gurls …

*

*

But a summer song doesn’t even have to mention summer, the sun, or the beach. Just look at last year’s big summer song, Robin Thicke’s Blurred Lines

*

*

You have to admit it was pretty darn catchy at the beginning of summer last year.

*

So what’s going to be the song of the summer this year?

Coldplay’s always good for crafting really catchy hooks. For A Sky Full of Stars, they brought in Avicii to give it an electronic dance feel. Definitely going to hear this a lot.

*

*

Magic!’s Rude has been around for a few months already, but it’s been catching on with different radio formats. Basically, any song with reggae beats is going to be in the mix.

*

I’m hoping for Jason DeRulo’s Wiggle but, alas, I don’t think the lyrics have that universal appeal…

*

*

But the one that’s gotta be the front-runner is Calvin Harris’ Summer.  My goal this year is to host a party like the one at the 3:25 mark of this video.  At The Sicilian’s house, not mine.

*

What do you think is going to be the song of the summer? What are your favorites from the past?

*

Have a great weekend!

Yeah, that’s a good one and was a late scratch from my list. Was watching the Crow and Perry videos too much. Sorry, Don.

If I don’t watch it, our household’s summer song will be “In Summer” from Disney’s “Frozen.” Might be an improvement over the song of summer a few years back, Miley Cyrus’ “Party in the USA.”

But no matter what, at the end of the summer, I’ll be playing this Brigitte Bardot’s “a la fin de l’été.”

That Ned Stark picture is everything.

I was hoping to God you didn’t mention “Wiggle” but I shouldn’t have been surprised. My kids laugh any time it comes on the car radio because they know I hate it. I’m afraid that’s going to be it (at least among the teeny bopper set).

Agree on Robin Thicke song from last year. Other songs that remind of summers in recent past include Maroon 5 “Payphone,” Carlie Rae Jepson’s one-hit-wonder “Call Me Maybe,” and Fun’s “We Are Young.”

I saw a list for this year that included Fun.’s sight of the sun. It was on Girls soundtrack and I downloaded it about a year ago and was surprised it didn’t take hold. If it does make it this year, you’ll love it

    Go ham sandwich!!

I burst out laughing every time I hear that lyric. It just never gets old.

But, importantly, what the hell is Jordin Sparks doing dating that dude? You know you’ve made some questionable career choices when the more acceptable half of your celebrity couple was an American Idol contestant.

Speaking of questionable, I had to explain to my son what “patty cake with no hands” meant. Btw – “questionable” is pronounced awesome dad
