Guilty Pleasures – Michael McDonald

How does the “shuffle” function on an iPod/iPhone work? You know, it’s that little feature that plays your songs back in random order. I assume other MP3 players have them too, but I can’t think of any other MP3 players not named iPod.

Anyway, I think there’s something wrong with the version I have on my iPhone.   It still mixes up the order of the songs nicely.  However, in the last week this song has come up at least three times

I love the Doobie Brothers – so much that my cat is named Doobie.  I especially love the songs that featured Michael McDonald, who joined the band in the late 70s.  He sang a few songs with them as well as played keyboards after a stint with Steely Dan.  His sound really captured late 70s rock for me, even if it is borderline jazz.

The problem is that I can’t understand half the words he sings.  Honestly, how much of this song can you make out?

He sounds like Vito Corleone with a sunstroke.

And for a while there it seemed like he was on every song that came on the radio. He was like a 70s/80s version of Lil Jon or Pitbull. Here’s a short list of who he’s collaborated with –

– Steely Dan

– Toto

– Kenny Loggins

– Van Halen – Didn’t realize he co-wrote I’ll Wait

– Christopher Cross (Ride Like the Wind)

– Patti LaBelle (On My Own)

– Carly Simon (You Belong to Me)

– Aretha Franklin (Ever Changing Times)

So why is this a Guilty Pleasure post? I’m glad you asked…

Have a great weekend!

Ride Like The Wind is one of those songs that just pops into my head for no reason.
I never mind when it does.

Yeah it pops into my head too. Another is I Keep Forgetting.

Yep. But then Taking It To The Streets pops up, and I just want to claw my brain out.

I had a brief encounter with Mr. McDonald last year and while he just might be one of the nicest celebrities on the planet, I had a hard time understanding what he said!
