And The Song of the Summer for 2014 was…

A few months ago, I posed the question, “What’s Going to be the Song of the Summer?”   It’s that song that captures the spirit of summer, that perfect soundtrack for driving around in the convertible, going to barbecues, or hanging out at the beach or pool.  And it has to be ubiquitous, too.  It can’t be the latest Ray LaMontagne song that only you and your other hipster friends listened to.

My guesses were for the Song of Summer 2014 were:

– Coldplay’s “Sky Full of Stars”

– Magic!’s “Rude”

– Jason DeRulo’s “Wiggle”

– Calvin Harris’ “Summer”

All of them received a lot of airplay and were very popular.  Of those songs, “Rude” came thisclose to being THE song. But it seems the consensus pick was a song by Iggy Azalea.

Her song “Fancy” tore up the charts and was heard just about everywhere I went this summer.

Great choice, general populace.  It’s a terrific song and I love that infectious bass line.  I actually thought of Iggy when I was making the list, but was leaning more towards “Problem,” the Ariana Grande song she appeared on –

But that song was already pretty big at the time and I thought it peaked too sun to be THE Song of Summer.

Really, who gives a rat’s ass what all the music charts, magazines, and industry folks say?  What matters most is what some two-bit food and wine blogger thinks, right?

I said, “RIGHT?”

I really loved “Summer” and “Problem” and both were played a lot in the car.  But there was one song that I played even more than those two combined.   It was a complete earworm that I couldn’t get out of my head since early June.   Like all earworms, I tried to get it out of my head by playing it incessantly.  When that didn’t work, I told all my friends about it to get it into their heads because, you know, misery loves company.   But it couldn’t rightfully be the song of summer 2014, because it came out in the mid-70s.

So what was the song? The song that defined Summer 2014 for yours truly?

Even after watching this video a thousand times, I still can’t figure out what’s up with Carolyn Willis’ eyebrows…

What was your song of the summer?

Totally agree on “Fancy” as song of the summer. To qualify, a song of the summer has to be associated with memories. Mine are being out on T & M’s boat on Burt Lake and wistfully spying on our kids at Camp AGQ, and hearing a group of girls singing the chorus to “Fancy” across the water. Or being with my daughter and her friends at Dairy Queen one warm night, with them dancing to “Fancy” in the dark as they slipped their Blizzards. (Even though, as my daughter said, “the words are pretty inappropriate.”) Or the obnoxious neighborhood teen who had it blasting out of his beater car windows, wide open, as he drove slowly down the street.

My song of the summer was Ryn Weaver’s OctaHate, which helped power me through many an early-morning session on the rowing machine:
