Did I ever mention that I’m a huge Beach Boys fan? I think I own most if not all of their work and even read a few books about them. So you can imagine I was little more than curious when I heard about the video that The BBC released earlier this week of a few dozen musicians performing “God Only Knows.” Have you seen it?

Between me and the Pieholes, we were able to identify almost all of the performers in it. As expected, they were able to identify some of the newer stars like Paloma Faith and Emeli Sande. And I was able to the identify the likes of Brian May, Chrissie Hynde, and Dave Grohl. What surprised me was how much overlap we had – Pharrell, Chris Martin, Stevie Wonder. I can’t decide if I should be proud that my kids have great taste in music or if I should be ashamed that I could correctly identify One Direction.
Not just the group, but each individual member.

The best part for me was that, not only DIDN’T I have to tell them who originally sang the song, they were able to correctly identify the great Brian Wilson as one of The Beach Boys.
My work is done here.
That said, I’m still not sure what I think of it. I used to get caught up in those all-star song things like “We Are the World”

But those were only good in the context of the video. I remember when my dad heard “We Are the World” in the car, he was annoyed because it was all these different voices going on and he wanted to hear more of Kenny Rogers. For me, having seen the video, what pissed me off was that we Americans didn’t have as cool of a song and or collection of singers as England’s Band Aid –

Here it is in mathematical form – Bono + Duran Duran > Dionne Warwick + Al Jarreau.
Though we did have Darryl Hannah.

I’m sure if I listened to the new BBC song without the visuals I’d be disappointed. But then again, that song is one of the greatest songs ever written. It’s so magical that I almost – almost – can stand Taylor Swift singing it.
Naaaahhh!!! Here’s the original –

Yeah, The Beach Boys rule.
What did you think of the new video? Can you identify One Direction? Did you like We Are the World or Do they Know it’s Christmas?”

Hahaha! I definitely cannoy identify each member of One Direction- only Zane and Harry because they are my sister’s favorites. I still love both We Are the World and Do they Know it’s Christmas? I totally blast the latter one in the car around the holidays. And by holidays, I mean anytime after October because that’s when all the Christmas stuff starts airing.
No no no no no no!! Christmas music can’t start until after Thanksgiving!
Awesome! Love the BBC take. I couldn’t identify the boys of New Direction, let alone the group. Then again, my son is only 9 months old so who knows what horrors await. I hope he has at least some of the good taste your kids show!
Haha, they’re only horrors if you let them be. I have a pretty open mind and my girls have actually introduced me to some cool stuff! Thanks for stopping by…
Thanks for sharing! I walked down the aisle to ‘God Only Knows’ love this compilation.
Yeah, I’m leaning towards liking this… What a terrific song for your wedding. Thanks for popping by!
Oh, very familiar with 1D (did you see that? I even know the abbreviation) I had the dubious pleasure of going to see them at the Rose Bowl a month ago for my daughter’s Christmas present- lemme tell you I deserve a mom of the month award or something for that- I had to drive 7 hrs for that concert and drove back the next day. And did I mention it was almost 100 degrees? But seeing her cry like a girl at her first Beatles concert was pretty cool- even though I think they barely qualify as musicians. And totally Band-Aid all the way- I still love hearing it at Christmas time- didn’t really like We Are The World
So who’s your favorite 1Der? The first concert I took my girls to was Lady Gaga at Lollapalooza a few years ago – Kids ten and under got in free. I was the coolest dad for about a week. Next week we’re seeing Calvin Harris and Zedd!
I actually used it for an upcoming article that will publish next week. It is a great love song that I shared with my hubby for our anniversary!
cool! can’t wait to see
