I’ve been dying to check out this restaurant since it opened last fall. Back then, Boom Boom and I were out for a night in the city to celebrate my birthday and it was a choice between Wright & Company and Selden Standard. We ended up at Selden, but had heard from many sources that Wright was a can’t miss.
The dinner almost ended in utter disaster before we even got seated. We’re talking down in flames, nukular napalm-level disaster. More on that tomorrow.
The Space
Wright & Company is on the second floor of the Wright-Kay Building, one of the oldest buildings in downtown Detroit. The building was originally the Schwankovsky Temple of Music and was the first in the city with an electric elevator. Then it was home to Wright-Kay Jewelers for 60 years, hence the restaurant name. The space that it occupies used to be a concert ballroom for the original owners.
A few short years ago, every building on the block was abandoned and in disrepair. They did an amazing job with the restoration. It was stunning.
What We Had
They serve seasonal small plates, so we ordered a bunch to share. But first a glass of Ameztoi “Rubentis” Rose, a Txakolina from the Basque region of Spain.
All of them were better than excellent, whatever that is. There wasn’t one complaint amongst any of us about any single bit of the meal. Everything was fresh, gorgeous, full of flavors, and well-executed. I could’ve eaten three or four orders of the beets and chicken liver mousse alone. And the burrata. But the big surprise was the Brussels sprout salad. So simple, so good.
As I mentioned, things got off to a disastrous start – through no fault of the restaurant. When you read about what happened, you’ll be even more impressed with the food. This dinner elevated everyone’s spirits and not only saved the night but made it a truly special one.
i’ve been wanting to try this place too, and now you’ve sealed the deal for me with this post. can’t wait to hear what happened –
Oh. Thanks for the reminder I actually have to write the post!!
Thanks for reminding me… I’ve made brussels sprout salad before (it’s an amazing salad base) and it’s been a while! I saw that pic and said “ohhhh yeah!”
I love beets. Everything looks beyond divine.
I’m not sure why you didn’t link to their website (that I could see): http://www.wrightdetroit.com/
I usually don’t link to restaurant sites – but for no particular reason… Have you been to Wright?
Ah! I just realized that your other link for Selden Standard was to your other post, not to the restaurant. Oopsie, apologies!
Not yet! I want to make it over to both of those, now. 😀
