Hatin’ on Grease

It’s theater time again here in Ann Arbor with Pioneer High School’s production of Grease opening this weekend.

Tickets are still available at showtix4u.com

Earlier this year, the school’s music program received yet another Grammy Signature School prize and was recognized as one of the top 3 in the country.   With one of the Pieholes in band and the other in choir and theater, I get to witness their greatness many times a year.   They never cease to amaze me with their talent and their ability to captivate me.

They’ve got their work cut out for them this time because, frankly, I hate Grease.

Yes, I know it’s a classic. And yes, there are some really good songs in it.  And yes, I really dug the movie when it came out.   But that was mostly due to Olivia Newton John in tight black leather.

But it’s sooooo dated.   We’re talking about a musical that was made FORTY years ago that features stories and music set SIXTY years ago. You know how old it is?   They had a song that featured date rape, and NO ONE CARED –

And you know what else was acceptable back then that today is an speakable crime against humanity?

John Travolta –

Interesting how Travolta’s taste in black leather has evolved through the years. Allegedly.

I really dislike Travolta.  I dislike his attention-grabbing hamminess onscreen.  I dislike how every movie of his in the 90s had a dance sequence.  I dislike how he can’t pronounce “Idina Menzel”.  And I REALLY dislike the current state of his hair.

Well, at least there are no plans for the high school – or anyone for that matter – to put on a production of Grease 2.

Ugh… All this talk about Travolta and Grease 2 has got me in a bad mood. Olivia, where are you?!?

Were you a Grease fan?  Did you see Grease 2?  Can you explain Travolta’s hair?

Not a Travolta fan either. Like Olivia though. But, think Grease is a bit lame even with her.

Honestly I’ve never been a Grease fan. It’s relieving to hear someone else say it

Yes-loved it, Yes- some pretty bad songs- the Reproduction one where they’re in Biology comes to mind, and no idea on the third- maybe L Ron Hubbard can explain it from beyond

Ugh. GREASE. It’s awful and quite possibly the worst. My favorite musical is Guys and Dolls, and while it definitely touches on the so-called emasculation of men, it’s not mean-spirited and it seems to speak to the only power the so-called “dolls” had over the men in their lives.

After seeing it, I like it even less. Luv the story line how Sandy has to completely change her appearance and who she is to get Danny.

  7. I am not a Grease fan either, I did like Travolta in it, did not like Newton-John. That must be a gender issue! The “kids these days” do like it, however, and my son played Kenicke a couple of years ago so now he is a fan. Danny and Sandy both changed their appearance for each other. Remember, he lettered in track for her while she started wearing make-up?

Anyway, (sort of off-topic but this is important!) we are moving back to MI in about 2 months, looking at Saline High School because that is where my in-laws are. We can see on-line that Saline has a gorgeous theater but the curriculum doesn’t seem to support much of a theater program. You mention Pioneer HS and that school has also caught my eye because it seems they have a built in theater but more teachers assigned to teach. Any perceptions on your part are welcome – we’ve not bought a house yet.

    • Cool! We actually live on the border of Ann Arbor and Saline in an area called Pittsfield Township. It has its own government, but A2 mailing address and A2 schools. We moved here from downtown A2 a couple years ago. Bc we’re in PT, our taxes are SIGNIFICANTLY lower because University of Michigan doesn’t contribute to tax base. No idea what Saline taxes are like, but housing is more affordable.

Re schools, Saline and A2 High Schools are consistently ranked near top of MI schools. Depending on what list, one is higher than the other but once you get that high, there isn’t much difference. Saline has great facilities and sports teams. Pioneer has a lot more diversity. Pioneer’s arts and music programs are some of the best in the country. They’ve recently won yet another Grammy Foundation award recognizing it as top 3 in the country. The theater program is usually one of the first to have shows where the licensing was just made available – like Shrek Jr, Rent, and Rock of Ages. The arts and school in general have a lot of connections with the University… Happy to give you more info. just email me at hedonist@foodandwinehedonist.com
