Although the show’s been on for many years, we only started watching Modern Family a year or so ago. But since then, not only have we stayed current with new episodes, we’ve gone back and saw most of the old ones. We can’t get enough of the sharp humor and oddball cast of characters.
One of my daughters made the observation that Boom Boom and I were just like one of the couples on the show. My mind immediately went to Phil and Claire Dunphy.

Several years ago, quite a few people mentioned that Boom Boom looked just like Julie Bowen, circa Happy Gilmore.

I wasn’t sure I saw the resemblance but, hey, she was hot. It was definitely a compliment. Although I do need to clarify that as wonderful as Boom Boom is, she still has yet to agree to re-enact the above scene.
It’s pretty clear that I don’t look anything like Phil, but I do dote on my wife, am often juvenile, and have a deathly fear of clowns.
Then I thought about their kids on the show and how they matched up pretty well with our family. One of our girls is a lot like Haley, a flirty social butterfly obsessed with fashion. Our other daughter is like Alex who is the exact opposite of her older sister. And Mini-me is just as goofy as Luke, his television counterpart.
I came across this video of Sarah Hyland , the actress who plays Haley, along with Boyce Avenue singing a cover of my favorite song from 2016 – The Chainsmokers’ “Closer”
I was impressed at my daughter’s observation. It’s easy to just watch a show for the entertainment value and just walk away from it. Even with a show as witty as this, it still takes some good astute insight and good sense of self to notice something like that.
Unfortunately, that’s not what my daughter was talking about. She was referring to another couple on the show, Gloria and Jay –

Her explanation – she’s younger and gorgeous while he’s as old as fuck.
It was probably because of that age that I forgot about her allowance for a good month.
One of my favorite shows
I thought you were being compared to Cam
Hmmm… musical theater and football obsessed? Nahhhhh
The first season is one of the best first seasons of a comedy in recent memory, but I stopped watching it around season 3-4 because they kept recycling plots too much. (There was a stretch there when every episode seemed to have a car incident involved.) I also got irrationally resentful when the show kept winning Emmys in lieu of more worthy shows, which I’m also sure contributed to me not watching the show anymore. I did see the more recent Facetime episode which was very creative and well-executed, but otherwise there are too many other shows for me to watch! #peakTVproblems
Yeah, a lot of car incidents and other recycled elements… maybe subconsciously speaking to the Groundhog Day -like nature of adulting?!? That FaceTime one was brilliant…
I saw the “punchline” coming! Not because I agree with your daughter but because of your setup. Great post, and definitely a great show! PS: I saw that video a while back, wow can she sing! Lovely song, too.
I’m getting too predictable! But thanks for kind words tho!!
Of course! 😀
